Employee Spotlight: Meet Phal Cindy Suon
Phal Cindy Suon | R&D Development Technician II | Alameda, CA
Q. Describe your professional journey at Penumbra.
I started my career at Penumbra in late 2007 as a product builder, and then worked my way up to become a production lead. I then transitioned to the Research & Development department, where I now work as a Product Development Tech II.
In my current role, I collaborate with Penumbra engineers to develop products from conceptualization to design validation. I work side by side with project managers and engineers to ensure all testing and prototypes are within aim of the project.
Q. What drew you to Penumbra; and what keeps you here?
Initially, I came to Penumbra due to my interest in working at a medical device company. I quickly realized that Penumbra offered a unique opportunity to grow as an individual and professional.
I’ve learned so much working here and feel deeply connected to Penumbra’s mission, which inspires me. I actually get to help develop products that can make such a difference in people’s lives.
Q. What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
Penumbra regularly shares its vision — one I fully support — with employees and is dedicated to its mission. This truly creates a family-oriented working environment, where everybody cares for each other. I love the challenge of coming to work and trying to determine how I can make a difference. I also fully appreciate the collaborative work environment that Penumbra offers.
Q. What is your personal philosophy?
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. Live simply. Lead with spirit. Always try to do what is right.
Q. If you did not pursue your current career, what do you see yourself doing professionally?
I know that I have always enjoyed helping people. I probably would have become involved with something related to my current career. Being part of a family in the medical device field gives me the full satisfaction that I desire.
Q. What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years?
Product development has helped broaden my knowledge about the company as a whole, as well as given me a better understanding of R&D’s critical responsibility.
I’ve learned the fruit of your labor shows the value of hard work and that — through collaboration with my colleagues — I have more to offer, am more capable, and can attain more than I previously realized.
