Penumbra focuses on developing, manufacturing and marketing products for use by specialist physicians, including interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, interventional neurologists, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons. Penumbra designs its products to provide specialist physicians with means to drive improved clinical outcomes.
Founded in 2004, Penumbra has successfully launched more than 16 product brands for neuro access, neuro and peripheral thrombectomy, neuro and peripheral embolization, and neurosurgical tools. Penumbra launched its first product, Neuron™, for neurovascular access in the U.S. in 2007. In 2008, Penumbra launched the first 510(k) cleared aspiration-based system, the Penumbra System®, for revascularization of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Penumbra has continued to advance the Penumbra System, including the introduction of five subsequent generations of Penumbra System reperfusion catheters.
In 2011, Penumbra launched its first neurovascular coil, Penumbra Coil 400™, for the embolization of brain aneurysms. Penumbra launched its first peripheral vascular product, the Ruby® Coil System, in 2013. In 2014, Penumbra launched the Indigo® System designed for aspiration-based clot removal in the peripheral vasculature.
