David Barry

Vice President of R&D

Prior to joining Penumbra, Mr. Barry served as Vice-President of R&D at Smart Therapeutics, where he led the development effort for the delivery system for the original product and subsequently the entire effort for Neuroform2, Neuroform2 Treo and Wingspan devices. Before joining Smart Therapeutics, he worked at Boston Scientific-Target where he was the technical lead for the development of the Matrix™ coil. Prior to that Mr. Barry served as an engineer at W.L. Gore & Associates where he worked on a novel PTCA balloon catheter and before that as an engineer at Cordis a Johnson & Johnson Company, where he was responsible for the development of the Prowler™ microcatheter family. Mr. Barry was born and raised in New England. On graduating from High School, David enlisted in the United States Air Force. Stationed at Barksdale AFB Louisiana, David performed follow-on testing and evaluation of air-launched weapons systems for Strategic Air Command. After his 4-year enlistment, Mr. Barry entered Northeastern University where he graduated cum laude with a degree in Chemical Engineering. While at Northeastern, he held various process-engineering positions within General Electric, Monsanto Chemical Company and Genzyme Corporation. Mr. Barry holds several international and domestic patents for medical devices. In his spare time he competes in triathlons, and is a two-time finisher of the Ironman™ triathlon.
